Evening Sun

The final period of daylight when indoor and outdoor light equalize, dissolving the line between built and natural space. A threshold between the clarity of day and the mystery of night, marked by a loosening of material and social barriers: collective gathering, movement, human connection.

The Collection

Evening Sun comprises two fastpacks — ES.RS and ES.ST — and a lightweight sports cap, ES.CAP.

The packs take their reference from Group B rally racing, and the homologation rule that paired every race car with a road-going counterpart: the Audi Quattro, the Ford RS200, the Lancia 037.

ES.RS

Race spec. Built for trail: hip belt, 500ml flask pockets, dual-entry bottle pockets. Body in ULTRA200X and ULTRA TX95, reinforced with recycled nylon stringers along the front to carry load close to the body.

ES.ST

Stage spec. A tamer, sleeker version for urban and shifting terrain. No hip belt, no flask pockets: zip pockets for keys and essentials instead. Body in ULTRAGRID, for durability and weather resistance.

ES.CAP

Balances sport performance with everyday wear, developed alongside the packs using the same high-performance fabrics.

Both share a monobody vented mesh back panel and straps, wrapping from thoracic zone to chest to eliminate bounce and hold weight in place through sustained movement: walking, running, hiking, travel.

Origin

The inspiration started with rides to the beach: quick single-track gravel roads, just before sunset. Daylight fell fast, and getting there before dark became our favourite challenge, each ride rewarded with a swim in the river. We became obsessed with the race down and back, hoping each time it would be darker than the last. There was something about it, as if we weren't supposed to be there, not supposed to see the forest turn toward night. It gave us a strong sense of presence: there, but invisible, held by the trees around us. We started out with a headlamp in our bag. By the end of summer, we never used it. The rush of outrunning the dark followed us into daily life; we were enamoured with curiosity towards this time of day.

Why is a fleeting moment the best moment? Because it demands presence: to feel, not think. Reflection should follow presence, never replace it; it's in those moments of flow that you actually understand what's happening.

Reference

Design research drew on three moth species: Long Tailed Burnet (Himantopteridae), Chinese Moon Moth (Actias dubernardi), African Moon Moth (Argema), and two rays, Manta (Mobula birostris) and Stingray (Aetobatus narinari). The biological world serves as a source of purposeful adaptation.

Philosophy

The work explores what it means to travel with the least gear possible while sustaining movement over both hard terrain and city streets. Carrying less means seeing more.

The same logic drives fastpacking: maximize flow, minimize gear. On trail, the experience reduces to its core: the self, present, surrounded by wind and stars. What you carry should be intentional. Nothing forgotten, nothing unnecessary. A practice of respect for the ground you move through.
